Death and Dying
Excerpt from DEATH
GURURAJ ANANDA YOGI: When passing over, the true meditator will learn how to die consciously. When most people die or pass over they become totally unconscious at the last minute. But when you learn the art of dying consciously through meditation and spiritual practices, it is a very, very beautiful experience.
I’ve experienced it a thousand times. It is where you go away into another dimension, a finer dimension. What causes the problems is the small conscious mind because the small conscious mind is always based on conflicts. If there were no conflicts, the conscious mind could not operate. There is always a contraction and expansion going on all the time, stimulated by the impressions that are in the subconscious. In order to overcome this state, we reach a higher level of the mind which we can call the superconscious mind.
At the time of passing, a meditator does not become unconscious. Instead, he reaches the level of the Super-Conscious, where he is aware of the transition. There are a few books about the dying process written by some doctors. One of them is titled Life After Life. They have made a very great mistake in those books. These doctors had examined people who were practically dead, or clinically dead, and had come back to life again. The common experience reported by these people was of going through a tunnel and of a light at the other end that comes and approaches them.
But there is no light that comes to approach you. Instead, as you pass over, the tunnel is actually you yourself going through the various layers of the mind, going to the finer layer of the mind. And that light which you see is the light which you are projecting outside of yourself. So, the light you find and which you see is not an external entity, but it is your own light. For that divine light resides within all.
To pass over is like leaving this room and going into another room. It is a pleasurable experience. But people fear it because they fear the unknown.
They do not know what is going to happen. When theologies could not organize churches through love, they started organizing them through fear. These theologies and their church organizations have to be blamed for planting this fear (of death) in people’s minds. Instead of teaching hope and love and eradicating fear, they plant fear with the threat of eternal damnation. No one is damned eternally. There is no place for eternal damnation. There’s only the place for upliftment, for Divinity is omnipresent.
Where is the damned place where you’ll suffer damnation if Divinity is (in) everything (and) is nothing but Heaven? For it is permeated by that divine energy. It is pleasurable and very blissful. Why should you fear death when that light within you, that spirit within you, is immortal? It is eternity itself. And man can experience the eternal value of life even while having a conscious mind. In the waking state, in the sleeping state, this could be a moment-to-moment experience that is totally blissful. It is our minds that produce these fears, and these fears are produced by the impressions that are in the subconscious mind. When you learn to overcome this fear then you will have the experience of happiness and that everything is all right.
